Although this show is basically a replacement for "The Sarah Jane Adventures" it's a pretty damn good one at that. Nicely enough, the premise is exactly what it says on the tin, with each episode/story being a battle between two factions; "Wizards vs Aliens" The wizards are the humans and it's where our main characters are based. Although interesting, wizard Tom is best friends with science nerd Benny who questions everything to do with magic. I really love this dynamic as the completely different upbringings and belief systems of Tom and Benny allows children to see that differences don't alienate us, and that they can work together using science and magic/different views to be successful. A lovely subtle message for kids! The stories are all 2-parters which does add some great tension and cliffhangers most weeks to episodes and allows for hour long scripts to be fully played out with decent pacing as in 30 minute episodes. I did prefer some stories to others but on the whole, the writing (especially for a children's show) was very good and the writing team made some good decisions about characters and relationships. (Tom's family orientated Dad and Gran really create a super bond). The show rounded off nicely with a very emotional finale. Lots of explosions, flashbacks, evil threats and plot twists etc. Though I did think the finale was struggling to be either a character development back story about Tom’s mum or a aliens-take-over-the-world type thing, so the plot was kind of left behind - but it was good to learn more about Tom’s family (even though it was really sad). Overall the series has been pretty good, not quite near the amazing heights of SJA or Wolfblood, but hopefully now the wizard/alien world have been suitably created, they’ll get on with some more plot driven stories soon.
