I have a massive soft spot for Wizards vs Aliens, mainly due to the sheer amount of emotions that come with each episode and that Benny Sherwood is the ultimate geeky sidekick, promoting SCIENCE IS FUN ( I’m all for a kids show that supports this) Overall, series 2 was a SUPERB series and the show retains its title as having some of the best story lines in Children's tv. Anyway, here are my thoughts (and some spoilers) on the whole of series 2: Back in series 1, the main thing I thought the show could benefit from was a strong female co-lead and, to the show’s credit, they have made an effort to either have a girl character guest star, or give Tom’s on/off girlfriend Katy more lines this time. Ursula too has remained a strong presence and an important oracle of information, rather than a comic relief. Very pleased to see she’s still alive as she seemed to be prepared to sacrifice her life every episode last season. The writing of each 2-part story does vary, but overall some brilliant concepts and story lines were featured in this series. The show builds on the magic/alien universe that was set up in s1 and has expanded it beautifully, with a strong nod to the magic community which I was particularly pleased with. Also the engaging story arc/sub plot about Jathro and the revolution was very intriguing, and also quite brave for a kids show (it did feel a little Hunger Games inspired!) The Nekros were fleshed out well as characters too, Lexi (the superb Gwendoline Christie) had a large role to play, and her humane nature was really lovely to see. Varg too had some character development, his plan in the finale was really rather intelligent and cunning. Just because they’re aliens, doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings; I was glad that the Nekros were shown to have emotions as well as the humans throughout the series. However the Tom/Benny strong friendship bond is still the highlight of the show. I love how different their personalities are, yet they’re still great friends (the episode where they became enemies was PAINFUL to watch). Their friendship and bromance is one of the strongest and most genuine I’ve seen on TV. Love how they support each other in life/death situations! I really enjoyed the finale (though it was a bit “Bad Wolf” inspired by the Doctor Who), the amount of drama, excitement and various perils faced by the characters was very intense and brilliant to watch. Well acted too, the main stars are barely out of their teens, and can capture a wide range of complex feelings pretty well. But I think the most impressive feat of the series was the beautiful scene in the finale where Benny came out to Tom as homosexual, STUNNING ACTING AND PERFECTLY WRITTEN, it truly will be an inspiration to kids watching and I applaud cbbc for having a show that stars an openly gay character.
