The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of June 5, 2017

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.

Daytime Divas: S1E1

Daytime Divas
(Series Premiere)

Monday at 10 p.m. on VH1

Why: Every weekday, the five female hosts of The Lunch Hour gather around a big table to discuss life, love, and all the hot goss. But oftentimes what's going on behind the scenes is far more entertaining than what makes it on air. Sound familiar? That's because this new series from VH1 is based on Star Jones' thinly veiled novel Satan's Sisters. We've got all the familiar archetypes: the no-nonsense mother hen (Vanessa Williams), the stand-up comedian who keeps everyone on their toes (the divine Tichina Arnold), the award-winning journalist, the former child star, and the token conservative. Come for Williams and stay for Arnold, who, as is often the case, steals so many scenes she should be locked up. Look, this is obviously a very silly, soapy slip of a show. And there sometimes is too much drama. But if you're looking for some frivolous, off-peak entertainment, this could hit the spot.

Prepare to talk about: Which bits actually happened at The View (I hope the on-camera heel toss is real); the roster of guest stars, which includes the real Star, playing herself; Vanessa Williams, an American treasure.

Orange is the New Black: S5E1

Orange is the New Black
(Season Premiere)

Friday at 3 a.m. on Netflix

Why: Finally, a full year after Season 4 dropped, we find out whether Dayanara pulls the trigger. The new season picks up right where it left off, with the ladies of Litchfield rioting over cramped living conditions and escalating brutality from inexperienced guards (one of whom they blame for the death of Poussey). Those who weren't directly involved in the initial rebellion must decide whether to join their fellow inmates or lay low as the warden and his officers fight back. Taking place over just three days, this is the jailhouse drama's most serious season yet (no more wondering which Emmy categories it should shoot for), but there are still some darkly comic moments. And the cast continues to kill it. Especially Danielle Brooks, who's always been a standout but who's truly powerful this season as Taystee, officially pushing out Piper to become the series' central figure.

Prepare to talk about: How little you care about Piper and Alex; how much you do suddenly care about Frieda; how creatively successful the show remains after five seasons.

Orphan Black: S5E1

Orphan Black
(Season Premiere)

Saturday at 10 p.m. on BBC America

Why: Ready or not (and I absolutely am not), Orphan Black is wrapping up its five-season run. The premiere picks up right where last season left off, with Sarah in a shit-ton of trouble. The girl can't catch a break, y'all! Wounded and struggling to find Cosima, Sarah hides from Neolutionists while slowly working her way toward what turns out to be a long-established island village. There, Cosima has reunited with Delphine and Rachel is becoming the new right hand to the 170-year-old founder of Neolution, PT Westmorland. Back in civilization, Neolution has its eyes on Alison and Donnie as a tool to hunt down Helena. Speaking of that sassy sestra, she experiences a gruesome pregnancy complication. There are several new players in the mix, including Art's pushy partner, who immediately sets off alarm bells. And while some of the show's myriad questions are being answered, new ones continue to emerge.

Prepare to talk about: WTF is going on with Rachel; why this show is ending after just five seasons; what the gifted Tatiana Maslany could possible do to top this career-defining role.

The Lunch Hour looks amazing. It's like the view version of what UnReal did to the Bachelor.

So sad to see Orphan Black go.... I almost don't want to watch the last season just so I can hold on a little longer..and end it with a Binge.

@Kishez Same!

And as for determining whether a show is important, it's heavily weighted by whether a series is premiering or airing its finale, the general excitement about it, plus my personal taste.

@T.J. DeGroat Love Island Season 3 is the most important show of this week. No doubt about it, it's going to rock! This show is heavily weighted by lip filler, fake tah tahs, and big , stupid, and unrealistic Brazilian Booty Lifts--and that's why I love it.

For Orange is the New Black I am prepared to talk about how little I care about pathetic convicts who are leeches.
