American Gods Reviews & Ratings

Sundays, 8:00 PM ET on Starz

60 minutes

A war is brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.

With a surprisingly original take on a mythos that has long been oversaturated in the tv and movie market, American Gods revitalizes the supernatural scene with amazingly beautiful shots, a diverse cast of characters, and a distinctly human feel to the struggles they encounter, supernatural or otherwise.

Four stars for the premiere as it was just so good, if a bit incomprehensible. I absolutely love this TV adaptation. Ian McShane as Wednesday is just perfect and so far it's just crazy manic chaos. I don't think we'll understand much of what is going on until we're further into the season. I enjoyed the book, it was patchy in places but it was still a good read. I think this will be even better.

The pilot left me with mixed feelings about this show because although there was the good stuff to keep me wanting more (i.e. the acting was solid, cinematography was beautiful, and that shocking scene) there was also the bad stuff (i.e. if you haven't read the book like me, you have no idea what the eff is going on).
So because there were so many good things, given that the trailer didn't give any clarity I decided turn to Google and I read the premise and it makes sense.

Without giving any spoilers, this is a fight between the "new" gods and the "old" mythological gods we've seen in tons of films and movies. Who are the new gods? Well, just think about what society "worships" now: Internet, computers, money/power via stock markets and conspiracy theories... those are, sadly, the new gods, and they want the old gods to hand over their power to them. The flashbacks can be a bit confusing without this information because the flashback allude to times when people believed in and prayed to the old gods.

I'm definitely not keen on shows that do such a poor job of telling the viewer WTF is going on that I have to Google the premise because the trailer gave little clue and the writers assume everyone has heard of or read the book, but it was worth it for this show given that the good stuff far outweighs the bad.... at least so far as of episode 2!

I think the most important thing to say in a review for those that don't know the book is this: do NOT give up, do NOT get frustrated because you don't understand. You will get it. It has nothing to do with not having read the book or the producers and writers being bad at their job. It's because this is how it is supposed to be. The idea is for you to enjoy it as it is. Enjoy the individual short stories and follow Shadow (who is as clueless as the viewer/reader). And as you watch you WILL get the information and get to know what is going on.

Edit after watching season 1:

I LOVE it. I can´t wait for season 2!

For new watchers, I recommend waiting until chapters 4 and 5 before considering giving up. 4 gives you the story of Laura and Shadow. And 5 makes clearer what is going on with Wednesday, Media, Technical Boy.... If after that you are still not hooked... well... I would still watch to the end. XDDDDDDD But it's probably the earliest you can decide "I know better what it is about, and it's not my thing".

AMERICAN GODS - SEASON ONE

American Gods is terribly slow and portentous, quite aware of its own heft. With eerie music, slow-motion sequences and a fondness for deep chiaroscuro, it comes on like a particularly long and mystical car ad.

Well now.... What an amazing show this is shaping up to be. I've never been a huge Neil Gaiman fan so I haven't read this but the TV series is so damn good. I honestly cannot remember looking forward to a Sunday night so much since The Venture Bros first came out. Literally cannot get enough of this right now.
