Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Overall Review~

Season 1 introduced us to the main storyline, which was quite simple really. Fumizuki Academy has a unique system in which Shoukanjuu, or summoned beings, are mediums for the students to fight it out – and their test grades make up how strong their summons are. However test grades also affect what class a student is put into, and the classes themselves are segregated. Class A gets fancy reclining seats and a luxurious environment while Class F gets tea tables and a shitty teacher. BakaTest tells the story of Class F’s Yoshii Akihisa, who, with his circle of friends, attempt to beat Class A in an Exam Summoning Battle (ESB) and swap for their facilities. READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 13 [Final]: To Be an Idiot

What really defined this episode was that it was chock full of BakaTest-style humour that only this show can pull off xD From tricking Shimizu into thinking Minami’s wall summon was just a dead end to Shouko acting all motherly to Himeji, this episode was definitely one of the best of the season. The method in which Akihisa and Yuuji actually won was so reminiscent of their plans to take over Class A’s facilities, except that instead of Class A, two second-years somehow beat a pair of third-years at their own game by lobbing a severed head at them. Remember, Yuuji’s actually a genius – looking back, it makes sense how that episode was used to reinforce that he only came up with such brilliant plans because of his hidden intelligence. That guy has an amazing fake mask on, actually being one of the smartest people in the whole series. And Shouko knows that ^^ READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 12: Test of Courage

BakaTest returns its usual self this week with a full blast of comedy and Shoukanjuu! Except…wait. What’s wrong with them THIS time? Conveniently, the summon system has broken down again, and the Shoukanjuu are all warped once more. It was much more entertaining than the last time it happened though – Akihisa’s one became a headless knight with a hilarious expression, Himeji became a succubus with huge boobs and Yuuji became a werewolf. And let’s not forget Minami’s WALL xD Compared to talking summons, a visual warp opens up so many gag possibilities (: Instead of letting the situation play out and die down, the principal uses this opportunity to pit the second-years against the year above them, which means that from Class F to A, the whole cast so far will band together! Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 11: The Genius

I think they might have mentioned it in a past ep somewhere, but otherwise I would never have guessed Yuuji was such a child prodigy when he was younger. And obviously, at such a young age, with brains comes arrogance, which led to him being targeted by the three sixth-graders in the year above him. I actually don’t like the child Yuuji as much, though he tried to pull a Lelouch plan and failed, he pretty much acts like a prick to everyone else as well, and his older self realizes this. By the way he looks like Otonashi Yuzuru from Angel Beats. He could have been in Class A at Fumizuki, easily having the potential to surpass Shouko. Or he could have gone to a high-class prep school as well. But his choice to man up and save Shouko was an amazing thing for him to do, and it probably started off his reputation and appearance change. Going from a smart aleck to a baka punk, I would never have guessed. Yuuji’s mother doesn’t seem to mind, being one of those mums that seem ditzy on the outside, but actually understand the situation more than anyone. Like Toradora’s Yasuko! READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 10: All’s Well that Ends Well

For fans of the Minami route, myself included all is not lost! After hearing Akihisa proclaim to Shimizu that he does have an interest in her, that is. Similar to what I predicted for this episode last week, Akihisa had to juggle between Minami’s feelings and the possible ESB with two classes without losing out to either of them. I was actually quite surprised at how sharp Shimizu was, managing to figure out the situation about how Akihisa dotes on Himeji so much more than Minami – even at the start all he talked about was making sure Himeji wasn’t transferred out, which pissed off Minami even more than she was already. After the ESB, Minami ended up overhearing Voyeur’s tape of Akihisa’s speech, turning her all dere and resolving all the problems thus far (: READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 9: Just Pretending

Did…that just seriously happen? I mean, Minami kissing Aki at the end of the episode 2 weeks back was pretty much a clear sign that she loves him, even amidst all the slapstick violent treatment she’s been giving him. Then, we had all that character development about Minami’s past, giving her a legit reason to start liking Akihisa. But now, I just feel really trolled – because Akihisa STILL HAS NO CLUE THAT TWO GIRLS ARE CHASING AFTER HIM. It’s not even him playing hard to get, he actually DOESN’T KNOW. Why the hell does he think that Himeji has acting experience of ALL THINGS, and it never crossed his mind that she actually does like him?????? READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 8: Language Barrier

It was hilarious. Just fucking hilarious – and that’s why I’m fully willing to ignore the fact the story isn’t moving on, and accepting this episode as character development. I never got tired of all the pronunciation errors Minami made, namely pronouncing watashi (私) as "what a shit", leading to a surprised Akihisa thinking just what the hell she was trying to say. Similarly, Akihisa asking Minami to be friends with him in the WRONG LANGUAGE was pretty retarded, but I guess it all adds to the comic humour. Assuming that this was around one year before the start of Season 1, it’s quite amazing how Minami managed to improve from her broken Japanese to fluency. Well, it sounded fluent to me, but only a local would know I guess. READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 7: The Final Battle

…I think I’ve just sat through what seemed to be a crossover between a war motion picture and some sort of exaggerated drama, but it managed to keep me entertained nevertheless. The heroic BGM as well as the expendable sacrifices made by the rest of the boys to allow Akihisa across to the girls bath only hyped up the situation, and for a moment I actually forgot what their real objective was, and it seems that Silver Link did so too. So in the end, after ALL that buildup the BakaTest version of Shirai Kuroko Shimizu from Class D was the culprit, throwing dirt on both Akihisa and Yuuji. Other than to keep Akihisa away from Minami, why? And how did she blackmail him exactly? The dramatic movie scenes, as well as the cutting out of the OP were done to put in more storyline, however I felt a lot of the original themes and points were lost. Sure, the Shoukanjuu scenes are always welcomed but wasn’t the whole point that they figured out who it was, how they did it, and their motive? I can’t help but feel that Silver Link created a really great action scene, with subtle Bleach references then rushed and stuck on a resolution at the end, giving the viewers no more info to the original situation than just a name, after 3 weeks of episodes. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni! Ep 6: Paradise

Once again, this week’s episode wasn’t split up into two chunks – instead, we had the second and third tries of the Class F boys into unravelling the mystery and peeking on the girls. The girl blackmailing Akihisa still has no identity, but it was heavily hinted that it was Kudou Aiko, the other frequently appearing Class A girl that conveniently has a tape recorder, and knows how to use it. But even though she’s the main suspect, she could still either be innocent or guilty. If she’s innocent, she could have genuinely found the real camera the spy is using and honestly told Akihisa about it, no strings attached. On the other hand though, she could have just as easily told them about the camera on purpose, to try and take the blame off herself. It’s really hard to tell which, as I don’t think she has that much of a motive to throw dirt on Akihisa and Yuuji. READ MORE...

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni Ep 5: School Trip Blackmail

Similar to the past four weeks, we get another filler out of BakaTest (officially known as anime-original content) however this time it’s going on for multiple episodes. If this had been Episode 1, I wouldn’t have minded so much but since next week marks the halfway point through the series and we’re still trudging through filler shit, I’m less than impressed. Even Blood-C picked up this week. After being convinced to try the scanlated manga by Eva, I learn the hard way that THERE IS A PLOT. And it continues immediately after the end of the first season. So this brings me to the inevitable question: WHY THE FUCK are we STILL in filler when enough manga or light novel plot EXISTS for Silver Link to animate? Putting that aside, this week’s blackmail victim plot wasn’t too bad, and was fairly interesting. The episode wasn’t split into two like some of the previous weeks, and if I hadn’t read a few chapters on in the manga, I would have thought this was proper content. So I’ll look at it as if it WAS proper content (: READ MORE...
