There are now twenty-six million Americans with chronic kidney disease. The best chance of survival for the sickest of those is a transplant – but in the United States alone the waiting list numbers in the tens of thousands. There is such a shortage of available kidneys that approximately four thousand five hundred Americans die waiting each year.
