Jonathan Strange finds out about the essence of madness which lets him to perceive far away magical lands as well as being able to call up the Gentleman. He follows him into the magical lands and his world is shaken by what he finds out. Norrell destroys Strange’s book and manages to undermine magic’s respectability in the process.
