Akatsuki's leadership — Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan — attend a meeting with the Amegakure leader Hanz?. During the meeting, members of Akatsuki discover the presence of Konoha's Root division in the meeting area and attempt to stop them, only to die at the hands of Obito Uchiha and Zetsu, who wish for Nagato to experience tragic loss and come to the same conclusion as Obito did. Root and their leader Danz? Shimura are revealed to have plotted with Hanz? to end Akatsuki's rebellion, capturing Konan and giving Nagato an ultimatum; kill Yahiko or they will kill Konan. Choosing for him, Yahiko runs himself into Nagato's kunai, killing himself. Seeing Yahiko dead, Hanz? orders Konan and Nagato killed. However, he only succeeds in badly damaging Nagato's legs with explosive tags. Enraged, Nagato uses his Rinnegan to summon the Gedo Statue, slaughtering the Konoha and Ame shinobi in the process. Hanz? escapes from Nagato's wrath and Nagato is finally driven by Obito's Eye of the Moon Plan. The final scene ends with Nagato looking at Yahiko, who is now the Deva Path.
