One Piece Episode #746 Anime Review

The weirdness of time within One Piece as an arc ends and the next begins is always definitely a little odd in a lot of ways. There’s that uncertainty of what it’s going to do, the nature of some of the minor character wrap-ups, and just the flow and pacing of it unless they’re seriously on the run. After two years of Dressrosa stories, I’m definitely feeling wary yet excited about the future of the show, though mostly just in what comes after the upcoming movie tie-in event. The show did some fun things the last time around in loosely forming a group around Luffy and the Straw Hats with a lot of people aligning with him without actually becoming actual Straw Hat pirates. It’s the kind of thing that feels right for Luffy and his style but also shows the changing nature of his stature in the larger story. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #745 Anime Review

With just a little bit more to go before we shift into a few weeks of prep/side story material for the One Piece Film: Gold event, the end of the Dressrosa arc has been very satisfying overall. While I would like a little more closure on certain elements, the simple truth is that the end of most arcs involves getting the hell out of there either willingly or unwillingly because things are going to go bad if they stick around. There’s a certain fun to the way these aspects unfold, but I’ll admit that I’d like to dig into the fallout from Doflamingo’s work here and how the ripples through the Navy and World Government as well as the Warlords is like. There are a lot of areas that the series can explore, though it’s no surprise that it mostly keeps its focus on the Straw Hats plus a few nods here and there as needed. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #744 Anime Review

As the show is getting very close to ending this arc, events are now finishing up so that we can make a side pivot. With a new film coming up this summer, we got the nod earlier this week that we’ll have something like three or four episodes that serve as a lead-in and side story for the One Piece Film: Gold release. That’s not a surprise and the basics look like it’ll be "old school" One Piece fun and after all the Dressrosa material and epilogue elements it’ll be nice to just disconnect for a bit for something fun. But before that we’ve got to get the gang off the island, which is going to be problematic as we saw Fujitora stepping up per instructions to go after them. We didn’t get a lot of action between him and Luffy the last time around but it had the right kind of delightful quick tease about it that made you want more of it. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #743 Anime Review

Considering that we’re what, a hundred plus some change worth of episodes since the Dressrosa arc began, spending most of the last episode bringing some closure for Rebecca and Kyros worked well. Though the show got away with quick one or two episode wraps up some six hundred episodes ago, things have gotten a lot more complex and involved since then and bringing these closure elements out with a more fulfilling and satisfying design has been a big plus. While I’m both excited and afraid to see what comes next as there’s a whole new learning curve ahead of us, I continue to enjoy the way that we do get these really good episodes that bring much to a close while showing us where it will all shift and move forward to next. We leave each of these areas knowing that life will continue and some of the path it will take. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #741 Anime Review

One Piece’s work with the epilogue material has been a lot of fun, though I was frustrated that we had one episode of the "Twirly Hat" crew before it shifted back to Dressrosa. I don’t exactly miss that segment of the crew because I’m watching older episodes for review on DVD and get to see plenty of them. But I’d like some new adventures for them too. The Dressrosa cleanup has been a lot of fun and seeing how thing were starting to turn more serious once again amid the way that the residents are coming together to make things right has been engaging. With Fujitora and the Navy in general getting back into the mix that certainly ups the ante as well, though it feels like there’s only so much they should really try to get away with considering the nature of who is on the island and what everyone accomplished by mostly working together. One Piece Episode #740 Anime Review

The return of the amusingly named Twirly Hat crew the last time around was definitely welcome, though after so long away it definitely took a good chunk of the episode to properly reconnect with the characters. I’ve had that experience in the show in the past after a large separation of characters and coming back to them as it takes a little bit to get back into the rhythm after not having them around and focusing on other dynamics for so long. It’s been what, almost a year since we had them in the mainline story? Still, the return of Nami and the others was definitely welcome for a reconnect and setting up what’s to come next. But there’s still a lot going on with Dressrosa and events there can’t be ignored entirely – though it all makes me long for the full crew to be back on deck. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #739 Anime Review

One Piece has certainly delighted me recently with the focus on Sabo as I really like the way the show brings in characters like this. With Sabo’s story in the greater series perspective being small but critical when it come to Luffy, having them return for a bit definitely makes an impact. The last couple of episodes provided for some new context to what happened to him after he left his brothers all those years ago and was thought dead by them and it’s something that could easily carry its own series. With this episode, the show wraps up that aspect of things and begins to reconnect with the Straw Hats themselves, which is a welcome moment in general but more so in this particular case with some long lost characters from this arc. One Piece Episode #738 Anime Review

While it was a long arc a couple hundred episodes ago, the time we got to explore the backstory for the three brothers of Ace, Luffy and Sabo was one of the highlights of the series for me. Getting to spend time then with them at a young age is often a drain on a lot of series but something about it clicked, particularly coming after Ace’s death in the present. So giving us some time with what happened to Sabo after those events, showing us in brief some of the path his life took that brought him to Dressrosa eventually was a very welcome reconnect. Enough so that, like Ace and his story, it could likely easily sustain his own series to flesh things out and provide for something engaging. Ace’s would be tragic though as you know the end result, but there’s something to be said for stories like that. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #737 Anime Review

One Piece works its epilogue elements pretty well for most of the arcs it’s had, something it did better and better as time went on and things became more complex. Spending the time to dig into the fallout of events and the overall ramifications makes for a more engaging show than one that just moves on to the next thing very quickly. The fact that we can, for the most part, get a few episodes in a row that deals with the locals and what’s going on there as well as the ramifications elsewhere in the world without focusing on the Straw Hats is a big deal. A lot of shows wouldn’t have the guts to do that and a lot of viewers really wouldn’t get behind it as well. But fans of the show know the bigger story at play here and understand the importance of setting more of the stage. READ MORE...

One Piece Episode #736 Anime Review

The exploration of the fallout from the events in Dressrosa are likely to be felt for some time to come based on what we’ve seen in past arcs and this one is definitely having a big effect. There was some really good stuff the last time around in sing Riku realize the scale of things, his own culpability, and the way the residents are rallying around him because they need someone to believe in that will guide them through what must come next. But Fujitora’s actions were definitely a big thing as they ended up sent to the surrounding islands in order to let them know what happened. And as we’ve seen before, this kind of news travels very fast and has a ripple effect that can grow in a very big way as it gets further out there. READ MORE...
