‘Outlander’ (Season 1) – What Is Possible?

Three weeks ago the much anticipated small screen adaptation of the best-selling novel  Outlander  by Diana Gabaldon debuted on Starz, drawing in impressive numbers for the pay cable outlet. From the outset, it was made clear that the TV series would follow closely to that of the book; and over the course of the past three weeks, each episode has made the world of Claire Beauchamp Randall (series lead Caitriona Balfe) and James (McTavish) Fraser (series lead Sam Heughan) feel very real with lush, colorful landscapes, amazing costumes from both 1945 and 1743 and undeniable chemistry between the lead characters. The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of August 25, 2014

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   The 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Monday at 8:00pm on NBC Why: It's television's biggest night! Also, you want to be outraged when your favorite show gets the shaft. Prepare to talk about: How Modern Family deserved nothing; how Seth Meyers surprised/disappointed you as host (remains to be seen); and how they never would have bumped the Oscars to a Monday for football.       Bachelor in Paradise Monday at 8pm on ABC Why: Because you don't want to watch the Emmys, you want a good, trashy time, and you know what? That's a fantastic reason. Prepare to talk about: How dumb everyone is, like, for real . They're so dumb. It's delightful to watch them be so dumb. This show has surpassed every expectation you have.         Outlander Saturday at 9pm on Starz Why: It's the biggest hit of the summer and everyone you know is obsessed with it because it's sexxxxy while also being adorably dopey. Prepare to talk about: Whether Claire will ever stop caring about Frank (because, honestly, he seemed pretty boring and besides, his ancestor WHO LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE HIM was a nightmare), and how you would react if you were thrown 200 years into the past because you'd TOTALLY be better at it than Claire is.     Leah E. Friedman  is the editor of You can follow her musings on  Twitter .

'Outlander' episode 3 preview, plus the 'Black Sails' crossover you didn't know you needed

Watch this new preview for  "Outlander"  episode 3, "The Way Out," which sees Claire continuing to plot her escape from Castle Leoch -- and seemingly confessing to Mrs. Fitz that she's a time-traveler from the future. It does not go well.  But the best video Starz has released in a long time is below -- it's a mash-up trailer for two of the network's dramas, "Outlander" and  "Black Sails."  It's a smart choice on Starz's part, because "Outlander" is the biggest debut the channel has ever had and "Black Sails" is a show that might also interest "Outlander" fans.  Read More... //

'Outlander' casts 'Doctor Who' alum Frazer Hines, who inspired books

Things are going to get very meta on  "Outlander."  Former  "Doctor Who"  companion Frazer Hines will guest star on an episode of the show's first season,  has learned.   Hines played Jamie McCrimmon, a Scottish companion to the Doctor, between 1966 and 1969. "Outlander" author Diana Gabaldon has said she was  inspired to write the book  while watching an episode featuring Hines. In fact, she named the male lead in her series Jamie Fraser, after both the actor and character.  Read More... //
