'Sherlock' Season 3: The importance of Holmes' wedding speech in 'The Sign of Three'

The second episode of "Sherlock" Season 3, "The Sign of Three," had Holmes' best-man speech at its center. There's a good reason for this: Creator Steven Moffat has wanted that speech to exist since he was a child. In an interview with Vulture, Moffat explains that a lack of any wedding details in the original Sherlock Holmes stories inspired his desire to know how it all went down. The book version had John Watson and Mary Morstan get married in between mystery insstallments, but that didn't satisfy Moffat."I remember being a 12-year-old kid thinking, 'Oh why didn't we see Sherlock be the best man? Please can we see that?'" Moffat explains in the interview. With no speech appearing in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Moffat made up his own mind about what the speech would include. "I thought what Sherlock would do is he'd sit there and think, 'Everyone's gonna think I'm gonna make... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/sherlock-season-3-the-importance-of-holmes-wedding-speech-in-the-sign-of-three.html

'Sherlock' Season 3: Amanda Abbington and Martin Freeman's not-wedding

Shooting the wedding in the Sunday, Jan. 26, episode of "Sherlock" on PBS' "Masterpiece Mystery" gave Amanda Abbington pause.Abbington plays Mary Morstan, the fiancee of John Watson (Martin Freeman), best friend and partner-in-crime-investigation to a 21st century Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch). In real life, Abbington and Freeman have been together for nearly 14 years and have two children, eight-year-old Joe and five-and-a-half-year-old Grace.Sitting with Zap2it during a recent visit to Southern California, Abbington recalls that, during filming, she thought, "'Well, we've done this now, haven't we? We're doing this now. We're having a party; I'm in a wedding dress; I've got a ring on; I just need to change my name by deed poll, and that's it.'"Asked why there hasn't been a real-life wedding thus far, Abbington says, "Yeah, I don't know. Maybe one day we will. It sometimes does [come up], 'Should we do it? I think we will, eventually. 'Sherlock': Amanda Abbington, EP Steven Moffat discuss Mary's place on the show

When it was revealed that Watson's fiancee, Mary Morstan, would be joining Season 3 of "Sherlock," the reaction from some fans was ... less than thrilled."There was a lot of, 'How could you bring her in, she's such a non-character, I hate her already,'" Amanda Abbington, who plays Mary, said Monday (Jan. 20) at the TCA winter press tour. "[I thought] give it a minute, let them see what I'm doing."What she's not doing, both Abbington and executive producer Steven Moffat say, is trying to break up the bromance between Watson (Martin Freeman) and Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch). "I think she's just very confident in her own skin," Abbington says. "She likes Sherlock, she loves John, she wants him to get back together with his friend. She just doesn't take any nonsense, and I kind of like that she's a very strong character. You see that in the rest of the series."Moffat says he was aware... //blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2014/01/sherlock-amanda-abbington-ep-steven-moffat-discuss-marys-place-on-the-show.html
