THE LEFTOVERS: Christopher Eccleston Delivers a Sermon on The Sudden Departure in New TV Spot

Since I don’t watch  True Blood  (and judging by Allison’s recent recap, I’m not missing anything), there’s a huge gap in my Sunday night viewings since  Game of Thrones  has wrapped for the year.  That gap might be filled with HBO’s new series,  The Leftovers .  The story takes place after the 2% of the population mysterious disappears, and centers on the people in a small town that didn’t make the cut.  HBO has released a new TV spot, and like the others, it’s intense, mysterious, and it’s interesting enough to make me want to at least check out the pilot. Why The Leftovers Isn't Lost: We're Not "Hoping to Find Out What Happened," Boss Says

Go ahead and compare HBO's new drama The Leftovers to Lost . Just go on and get it out of you system. On the surface, the two shows undoubtedly share some DNA. Both were co-created by Damon Lindelof . Both explore the struggle between science and faith. And both feature a large cast of characters trying to move on from a life-altering event. But the thing that sets the two shows apart is crucial: While Lost was derided by many for the answers it provided to the show's once-celebrated head-scratchers, The Leftovers has absolutely zero interest in explaining its central mystery. Episode Synopsis: “Pilot” – Three years after millions of people – some 2% of the world’s population – vanished into thin air, residents of Mapleton, NY weigh the pros and cons of a “Heroes Day” tribute to the local “Departed.” Attempting to maintain a sense of normalcy in his strained community, police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) faces additional challenges at home with his daughter, Jill (Margaret Qualley), who’s lost in a cloud of apathy with her friend Aimee (Emily Meade), and son, Tom (Chris Zylka), who has gravitated to a cult led by the charismatic Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph). Also of concern is a silent, white-clad group of chain-smoking men and women called the Guilty Remnant, who team up in pairs to stake out people and places around town. As tension in Mapleton escalates, the lives of Laurie (Amy Brenneman), an unexpected member of the Guilty Remnant, and Meg (Liv Tyler), a recently engaged young woman, converge. The Leftovers Review: Damon Lindelof Explores the Great Spiritual Unknown in Moody HBO Series

When two percent of world's population disappears in an instant, who, exactly, are the chosen ones? The departed, or those left behind? The Leftovers, HBO's elegiac new series from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and novelist Tom Perrotta, grapples with that conundrum, and what it means to survive an inexplicable event, to inconclusive affect. The Leftovers Author Tom Perrotta Breaks Down How He Went Hollywood

Tom Perrotta, who helped adapt his pseudo-Rapture novel The Leftovers into HBOs big summer series (premiering Sunday), joined the show as a writers-room virgin but a veteran self-adapter. All six of his novels and one of his two story collections have been optioned, and Perrottas had a hand in every screenplay but one (Alexander Paynes Election ); he has also written a couple of original scripts. A rare sideline for a literary writer, its as instructive for its failures as its hits. On a recent visit to Perrottas home in the verdant Boston suburb of Belmont, Vulture asked the author to take us on a walk-through of what he calls the systematic exploitation of my work.   Read More... //www.vulture.com/2014/06/tom-perrotta-leftovers-election-book-adaptations.html
