The Magicians Season 3 Episode 13 Review: Will You Play With Me?

On The Magicians Season 3 Episode 13 , viewers were offered a satisfying cliffhanger that serves as the perfect ending to a near perfect season. Will You Play With Me? ended up being both exactly and not at all what I expected from this seasons finale. Completing the quest was ultimately in the cards. Not having the team unlock magic would have essentially made all the mechanisms of the season a waste. But the ultimate cost of turning it back on was the real shocker and proves that The Magicians writers have a real understanding of what separates a good plot twist from a great one.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/04/the-magicians-season-3-episode-13-review-will-you-play-with-me/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 12 Review: The Fillorian Candidate

TheBrakebillscrew must face a season's worth of journeys to collect the sixth and final key on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 12 . Sometimes finales sneak up on you, but "The Fillorian Candidate" felt like a very blunt and obvious pre-cursor to the end. The group got their key (and bullet) for the boss level challenge at the Castle of the Gods, thus concluding their "restore magic" quest. The Fairies are no longer a violent threat.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/03/the-magicians-season-3-episode-12-review-the-fillorian-candidate/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 11 Review: Twenty-Three

On The Magicians Season 3 Episode 11 , Josh and Julia take a trip to an alternate reality and give the series one of its wildest and most engaging episodes this season. Taking quite a leap from the end of the last episode, we are taken on yet another key quest that plays to the splintering of time and dimension. Leading with the newly formed understanding between the Fairy Queen and Julia, the ousted royalty of Fillory puts addressing Ticks bounty of their heads on hold to figure out how the fairies ruler may be able to help them bring magic back.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/03/the-magicians-season-3-episode-11-review-twenty-three/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 10 Review: The Art of the Deal

The truth behind Sky's enslavement and the Fairies terraforming of Fillory may have set the magical creatures free, but no good deed goes unpunished according to The Magicians Season 3 Episode 10 . There have been questions about the connection between the Earth fairies and the Fillory fairies, as well as how storylines of Brakebills and Fillory might collide with them this season. We've now seen what that connection is and the truth is pretty ugly. But so much of the season has focused on the fairies as a largely quiet, but violent threat against magicians that it was a bit startling to see them on other ends of the power spectrum during "The Art of the Deal."   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/03/the-magicians-season-3-episode-10-review-the-art-of-the-deal/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 9 Review: All That Josh

The Brakebills crew runs into an old friend and proves that no one gets left behind on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 9 . Before we dive into any other part of this weeks episode, I have to give this show props for acknowledging some narrative shortcomings. In fact, I want to applaud The Magicians willingness to do this so consistently, as it has become easily one of my top three favorite things about the show. Plot holes shouldnt happen, but when youre dealing with big worlds and big casts, they do. As viewers we mostly expect the show to address them and understandably get disappointed when they dont. Dont start a plot you cant finish is a big rule for me.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/03/the-magicians-season-3-episode-9-review-all-that-josh/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 8 Review: Six Short Stories About Magic

On The Magicians Season 3 Episode 8 , the writers dabble in something stranger than fiction, scrambling (or unscrambling) the storylines and fates of several characters. While past episodes have felt more character focused, "Six Short Stories About Magic" was definitely plot driven, which took some of the magic out of it for me. That's not to say it wasn't good. In fact, the episode playing with its structure was one of the coolest things its done all season. It was, of course, a very meta writing decision, but as we know, that's part of this show's distinct identity, so it definitely worked for me.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/02/the-magicians-season-3-episode-8-review-six-short-stories-about/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 7 Review: Poached Eggs

The stakes get bigger and the plot lines thicker during The Magicians Season 3 Episode 7 . There have been quite a few recent episodes that I have felt exemplified the strength(s) of The Magicians. But this latest installment is perhaps one of the best at showing how far this series has come (and is ahead of others shows) in terms of developing a story. As Ive said before, juggling a large lead ensemble, multiple worlds and a handful of both tangible and intangible threats is an incredibly hard thing to do. Its even harder to do cohesively.  ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/02/the-magicians-season-3-episode-7-review-poached-eggs/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 6 Review: Do You Like Teeth?

Revelation is at the center of The Magicians Season 3 Episode 6 , as a new part of the Fairy Queens plans, Julias magic and Quentins guilt are all unveiled. There were a lot of moving parts that fell into this larger theme of the reveal this week, and it left me feeling quite satisfied just one episode out of the seasons halfway point. I will say that it felt like there was a lot more than usual happening. As we saw at the end of The Magicians Season 3 Episode 5 , Alice figured out how to transfer magic between her and Julia. And as I had hoped, we learn that the easy solution is incredibly dangerous thanks to Penny.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/02/the-magicians-season-3-episode-6-review-do-you-like-teeth/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 5 Review: A Life In The Day

The beauty and tragedy of magic are on full display as new obstacles arise for the entireBrakebillscrew on The Magicians Season 3 Episode 5 . This weeks episode of The Magicians is perhaps the best example of what this show does so well and how well it can do it. To be honest, my initial reaction while watching was that its one of, if not the, (thematically) strongest episodes the series has ever had. In nearly every storyline of A Life in the Day, the show delivers on both the beauty and horrors of metaphorical and literal fantasy. From this, we get striking juxtapositions and realities about life, death, and love.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/02/the-magicians-season-3-episode-5-review-a-life-in-the-day/

The Magicians Season 3 Episode 4 Review: Be the Penny

The world of magic grows bigger even as theres little magic in it during The Magicians Season 3 Episode 4 . Be The Penny is probably one of the most interesting episodes to date. In a matter of 42 minutes, the show crammed in an admirable amount of plot development without overwhelming the audience. At the same time, it also took steps to ensure viewers understood the mechanics of what was happening. That is often a tricky balance for storytellers, especially for series featuring casts as large as that on The Magicians. And yet the writers managed to feature every character, address a shift in their plot or character development, expand the universe, and explain how the heck aspects of the universe work near effortlessly.   ...Read More... https://www.tvfanatic.com/2018/01/the-magicians-season-3-episode-4-review-be-the-penny/
