Toriko Episode #24 Anime Review

With shows like Toriko, it does continue to amaze me that we can spend more than half an episode with nothing happening. For a show that spends multiple episodes with Toriko and the gang inside the Regal Mammoth’s insides, it just feels weird to have an episode where Toriko and Komatsu end up at a bar as the first part of their journey to search for the Century Soup and basically sit around palling with various other Gourmet Hunters. It has some merit to it in that we get to see the camaraderie that many of them share with each other and the lengthy relationships that have stemmed from it, but unfortunately the cast of characters here essentially makes it rather dull to watch. Toriko Episode #23 Anime Review

With Komatsu and toriko having headed into the food related amusement park, there was some definite fun to be had there, especially as they met up with old lady Setsuno. She’s fun to watch simply because she plays to the old lady stereotype so well in that she’s exceptionally gifted and had an impressive life behind her and is still fully capable. And Toriko is respectful to her and Komatsu gets to experience something quite legendary. Even the water in the small diner she runs is considered out of this world with its origins, which further impresses the young man. Setsuno brings that conflicting element out well in that she has only high class foods in her place but it looks like a dive. READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #20 Anime Review

With a lot of fun in the last episode with the BB Corn and the massive amounts of popcorn that was created from it, Toriko gave me a good time to be had as it went back to some of what I enjoyed about the show at the beginning. The smaller moments, the strangeness of it all and the love of food and adventure. With his storyline and the one showing Komatsu heading to the same land in order to find ingredients he needed, we get a pair of parallel storylines running that looked to be all about the fun and straightforward adventure. Of course, the end of the last episode had to shake things up a bit as well with a four armed man that suddenly showed up with Toriko to cause a bit of trouble. READ MORE... ">READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #22 Anime Review

After a few episodes that toned things down a bit compared to the Jewel Meat storyline, everything has now brought Toriko and Komatsu back together and they’re offer to visit Bellyfull Town of all places. While the Gourmet World is certainly amusing with its focus on the food (and how thin everyone seems!), the naming and some of the things they come across are just hilarious. But as the last couple of episodes have been tame by comparison, it has started to offer up a look at the bigger picture as well with the threat from the Gourmet Corps. READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #21 Anime Review

Toriko’s arc in the last few episodes has been welcome in that it feels like a rather small work overall rather than something big, huge and impressive. As much as those kinds of stories can be fun, Toriko seems to work better on a more personal level. Splitting him and Komatsu has also been a nice element as they’re on their own adventures for awhile rather than just split up during a moment of danger or excitement. It’s also a good story element in place here that’s letting Toriko and Terry spend time together on the Wool Continent where they can get to know each other better and come to an understanding of sorts about how each of them lives and operates. Toriko Episode #19 Anime Review

With the past couple of episodes and the focus on this very unexplored land that’s outside of the known world, Toriko is going back to what made the early episodes interesting with one-off adventures involving strange beasts and a sense of wonder about things. Toriko’s not a character that you want to see spending time inside of an arena or spending a ton of time inside the belly of a beast for a few episodes. With Komatsu and the gang heading after Toriko and Terry, it offers up a chance to see a lot more variety in that space of time since there’s some distance between them already. READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #18 Anime Review

With the focus shifting a bit to Komatsu, it’s been fun to watch him going after things in a positive way to get what he needs to finish a particular dish. After the time he’s spent with Toriko, he’s definitely become more outgoing and aggressive in what he needs to do to secure ingredients. He didn’t start off as a weak character in a way though, but rather one who hadn’t been out in the world all that much. Spending a lot of time with Toriko and going on multiple adventures after meeting him certainly showed him more of the world and his own involvement in those adventures gave him a bit more confidence, in both himself and his culinary abilities. Toriko draws out the best in people when they work together and Komatsu has definitely taken it all in. READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #17 Anime Review

With the overly long Jewel Meat arc finally done and over with, an arc that culminated in a big meal that had all the characters positively glowing with its juices, life settles back in a little bit. What’s actually interesting at the start is that we get a fun look at Toriko’s house which is like a much more varied version out of Hansel and Gretal where he’s eating everything left and right as he walks through it. It’s comical and silly but it works rather well in showing the diversity and strangeness in which this world exists. It’s the kind of scene you should hate but can’t help but to smile about because it is cute and fun. READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #16 Anime Review

Toriko’s getting into One Piece territory here with its opening sequence and recap material as it’s nearly five minutes into the episode before we get to the new material, which has Komatsu standing firm against the GT Robot after losing Toriko. The GT Robot continues to be the creepiest of them all if only because of the way it exudes darkness, which is a nice contrast to Toriko’s return and glistening muscles which gives it a sense of presence and self. It’s through the GT Robot that we do learn that Toriko is still evolving, which makes sense after he had himself a very good helping of Jewel Meat previously that served to up him. READ MORE...

Toriko Episode #15 Review

While the past couple of episodes have focused on the other fights with Sunny and Coco going against the GT Robots, Toriko turns its focus on the title character himself as he continuse to make his way further down the path to finding the Jewel Meat. But as we see them get further down the path, the dangers are increasing and in fact Rin ends up meeting a bad fate right at the start here that ends up splitting the group. It turns out so bad that Tina ends up heading out to get Sunny and Coco for help, though it’s going to be difficult to do considering how little time she has left because of the poison that’s been released in the air by the black GT Robot that has been following them.
