The series is set in Warrington, Cheshire, in the fictional supermarket of Valco. Julie (Jane Horrocks), is the acting deputy manager, who works alongside store manager Gavin (Jason Watkins), to whom she is romantically attracted. Andy (Mark Addy) and Kieran (Nick Blood) are the store's butchers, Katie (Chanel Cresswell) works on the checkouts, and has a flirtatious relationship with Kieran. Margaret (Rita May), the oldest of the team, struggles to settle in. Leighton (Joel Fry) is a happy-go-lucky, aloof shelf-stacker along with his colleague, Colin (Carl Rice) who in contrast is lazy and very unhelpful to customers.
