Upotte!! Episode #09 Anime Review

"Burn Up! Get Mad" looks like another beach episode at first. The girls are at the beach frolicking around and enjoying life. Until a mysterious group from the east makes this a retreat worth remembering, for all the wrong reasons. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #10 Anime Review

After the ninth episode was taken down, I partially gave up on the series a bit. That episode did get put back online, after the tenth episode went up I believe, but the series is one that didn’t captivate me enough to go back and check out that episode, since I know I’ll see it when it gets released on DVD down the line since it was picked up upon simulcast. With this episode being the last, and the show light on continuity, we’re just jumping into it. Which is good since this one deals with some of the events of the previous episode but largely just jumps into the action. The show has had some action before, such as their battle exam, but that pales compared to what they’re doing here as the girls are in an all out firefight. And it’s just plain fun to watch unfold. Upotte!! Episode #08 Anime Review

When it comes to this academy, their culture festival/school fair is a bit unlike other schools because of the girls backgrounds. It’s no surprise that it’s the kind of fair where there’s all sorts of military oriented activities and items around, which can certainly make things a bit difficult for the Japanese teacher, who after eight episodes is still nameless. This is made more apparent at the start when there’s a tank rolling onto the school grounds, live ammunition is available and there’s all sorts of other weapons and explosives available. And for the students, or at least most of them, this makes for an exciting time, especially for those like Ichiroku that can now get her hands on lots of stuff. Funco, for her part, is excited about an oversized specialty coat that she can get. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #07 Anime Review

The battle exam that was dealt with in the past couple of episodes had some good moments as it worked to get some of the characters a bit clearer with their abilities and how well they all connect with each other and respect each other. There’s certainly reasons some will look down on others so it wasn’t a surprise to see that dealt with and fixed as everyone shows their true worth. With that out of the way and everyone having given their all for their exam, it’s time to rest and relax as it’s now suddenly winter. And that means hotpot, blankets and getting ready for the new year. The girls do often act like normal girls even though they’re weapons, so it’s good to hit up the softer side as well. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #06 Anime Review

With the exam going on in the field, doing the full on battle mode, Sako has managed to take down quite a few people even as those we’re more familiar with are doing their best to fight back. It’s gotten complicated along the way at times because Sako has mastered the right moves to deal with each of the individual girls and their particular gun-quirks. With Sig being taken down from a distance and another girl in the muck after being brutalized, it’s just sad in a way to watch it unfold. But you have to give it to Eru that she’s doing her best to try even if she can’t quite bring herself to do it. Showing her with weakness does fit, but it also makes it harder to connect with her if she can’t fulfill what she’s plainly designed to do. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #05 Anime Review

Upotte worked in the battle exam in the previous episode, along with a dose of character material and history material, which makes this episode easy to work with as it just continues on with the exam. The girls are all doing their best, but some are obviously performing better than others. Ichiroku in particular does quite good and has excelled where others have not, even against some tough challenges. Others like Eru are just falling apart in a lot of ways, seemingly literally if you go by what Funco talks about at one point, so the field of exam takers continues to be whittled away. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #04 Anime Review

Life as a gun in human form may seem like a breeze in a lot of ways but there are struggles to have as well. As we’ve seen in the last few episodes, it’s not easy being a gun in a human world because of the way they’re utilized and the kinds of quirks that each of them comes with. For some of them, even though they’re teenage girls here, they have a lengthy history to them and we see a cute but surreal aspect of that with how Ichiroku for example has changed over the course of time and how she’s used in the world today. Ichiroku is proud of her history and accomplishments but there are some that we see view her as a cheap and easy kind of gun and not really worthy of much respect. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #03 Anime Review

With the wide variety of the season, there is certainly a place for something as unusual as Upotte!! out there. With the first two episodes, it’s definitely been quirky with what it wants to do and be but it’s also felt like it didn’t know how to execute the concept, especially in the first episode. That problem of execution has been one that has made this the only show I feel like I might drop this season, but I’m quite curious to see where they’ll go with it. And it doesn’t hurt that the show is just ten episodes either. The lack of a character to really feel drawn to and like has been the hard part, though as is common, watching the things that Funco has to go through is kind of the main draw. READ MORE...

Upotte!! Episode #02 Anime Review

With the first episode of Upotte, we were treated to something that was certainly strange and bizarre, which is saying a lot when it comes to the way "high school girls" shows can be tweaked and modified over the years into any subgenre. Bringing in a group of girls at a special academy that are actually guns given human form but the quirks of the guns definitely is a bit out there, but everyone that I’ve explained the concept to find it to be really intriguing. Execution is the problem though as the opening episode had its moments but the whole thing felt just so awkward in what they were trying to do that it felt like it faltered in really following through with it. Upotte!! Episode #01 Anime Review

With a planned ten episode run for this Original Net Animation series, Upotte!! looks like it has a cutely fun and interesting premise about it as it deals with a school whose focus is heavily on guns, among other things. It’s an all girls school at that which just heightens what it can do, giving it a mild Strike Witches feeling from the start because of its quasi-military aspect. The show comes from the manga of the same name by Kitsune Tennouji which began in 2008 and has a few volumes under its belt now, which also gives it a reason for not going over the top wit hits episode count.
