What We're Watching

HBO (Or HBO Max? Or Max? Or Home Box Office? Who knows anymore) brings us this hard-bitten series starring Mark Ruffalo as a Philadelphia-based FBI agent heading up a task force to end a string of violent robberies undertaken by an unassuming family man played by Tom Pelphrey.

Helmed by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby, viewers are already drawing parallels between the two shows, both exploring similar themes of grief, generational trauma, guilt, and familial responsibility through the lens of the detective.

All of them have flaws. That’s why I love them.
Failed every time. It’s the murders’ fault.

The animation is exceptionally thoughtful and dynamic. After having finally gone through the entire original run of the show, I made it to '97. The final season was a slog to get through, and the animation was severely lacking. So, to see this new show make big, bold, and beautiful choices with the animation was delightful.

From the first episode, it's clear how mature the action is and that the story the animators and creators aim to tell is mature as well. There is a sequence in the first episode that made me rewind and say "Ho-ly Shit" that was phenomenal. Then those sequences pop up throughout this first season. It truly is an excellent show.

NORTH SHORE - SEASON ONE

A fish-out-of-water muddle of a murder-mystery. I had hoped the characters would develop but they remained 2D and unlikable. A guessed who did it but seems they read Wikipedia to theorise the concept of murder. Avoid.

UNTAMED - SEASON ONE

While it’s made with care and staffed with capable performances, the take on crime and punishment in this limited series too often feels like the same 10 per cent of the crime genre we’ve seen before.
