When Egyptian-born terrorist suspect Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally) disappears on a flight from South Africa to Chicago, his pregnant American wife, Isabella (Reese Witherspoon), travels to Washington to try and learn the reason for his disappearance. Much to her anger and despair, Isabella is met with barriers preventing her from even knowing the reason for his detention. Meanwhile, at a secret detention facility somewhere outside the United States, CIA analyst Douglas Freeman (Jake Gyllenhaal) is forced to question his assignment in an attempt to save thousands as he becomes a party to the torture of El-Ibrahimi, helplessly watching the torture of Anwar, who is an alleged terrorist, based on a call in his phone record. During the same time, the torturer, Abasi, is trying to find the whereabout of his daughter, Fatima, who ran away with a boy whose brother died in one of Abasi's prisons.
