Modern Family Episode 18: "Starry Night" Review

"Starry Night" was a near perfect episode of Modern Family. The storylines were great and tied together in very entertaining ways. The characters delivered what we would expect, while still being able to develop deeper connections between each other. And it was also fall-off-the-couch hilarious. Add the patented Modern Family touching ending and you've got one of their best episodes of this debut season.

Things started in the Dunphy household with both Luke and Haley having projects due the very next day that they had yet to start. In my last review of Modern Family I complained about how under developed the Dunphy children were. This episode did little to change that, but it did a great job of putting their stereotypical traits to hilarious use. The combination of Luke and Phil working on the Van Gogh project together offered up plenty of laughs. Their mutual attention deficit hyperactivity disorders made for a number of funny non-sequiturs. The best bit came when Alex was explaining the symptoms of ADHD to her mother. As she listed off the various signs, we would cut back to Phil displaying that particular symptom. Ty Burrell continues to own this role, and this simple, nearly dialogue free scene of his attention jumping from screwdriver to light to sunglasses was hysterical.
