American Idol closed out its often tedious audition process with an entertaining "best of the rest" installment full of talented singers and a handful of really bad ones. Eighteen singers were highlighted, compared with the usual average of twelve we saw in the city auditions. Since they sent a whopping 181 people to Hollywood, it seems like the show is more than capable of providing us with this much talent every week, so why do they insist on holding out on us?
The episode kicked off by showing us how that Pants On The Ground guy became a temporary cultural phenomenon. Personally, I thought it was a mistake to point out that the only truly memorable audition this year was from a guy that was too old to be eligible anyway, but whatever. Someone also needed to remind us for a third freaking time how much Ryan liked the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders - enough already!
But, those are quibbles. The episode was full of interesting performers, my favorite being Crystal Bowersox, who rocked blond dreads and a seriously good voice. Another great audition was turned in by Lacey Brown, who made the top 50 last season only to lose out in a sing off to Megan Joy (Corkery). I don't remember her but she sounds terrific. A returnee I did remember was hippie Rose Flack, who I adored last season. She kind of crumbled during the group sing drama though and couldn't remember her words. Hopefully she'll have a better time this year.
