Spartacus: Blood and Sand: "The Thing in the Pit" Review Episode 4

After his shameful display in his fight against Crixus, Spartacus is stripped of his gladiatorial status and forced to fight in the pits, a hellish arena of death that makes fighting in the coliseums of the Roman Empire look like a stroll in the park. There's no option for surrender here, Spartacus must fight like the dog he is to keep himself alive and hopefully gain favor with Batiatus once again. "The Thing in the Pit" is a bloodbath of an episode that doesn't match the strong narrative from last week but may find favor amongst those of you who love bloodsports.

The pit opens things up a bit allow for even more bloodier and creative bouts than before. There are some truly frightening foes for Spartacus to face this week. If I was a more squeamish man I might have found myself turning away during the more intense moments of these gory brawls but I managed to hold my lunch and brave through these inspired fights. I'm going to assume that if you've made it this far into the series you can stomach a bloodbath but I'll still warn you that some of the stuff you'll see here is down right terrifying. Spartacus' final opponent has a face that nightmares are made of. I'm not usually a huge fan of gore but the good fight choreography more than made up for it.
