30 Rock: "Anna Howard Shaw Day" Review Season 4, Episode 13

The television week has been full of series tackling the Valentine's holiday, and 30 Rock was no exception. Instead of torturing herself with a daylong celebration of love "created by card companies to reinforce and exploit gender stereotypes." Liz planned to take herself out of the equation entirely with scheduled oral surgery. It was a plan that would have surely worked, if not for the necessity of having someone to pick her up after the procedure. Even when making bold attempts to disguise it, Liz Lemon can't avoid the fact that she is completely and utterly alone.

And perhaps that's why "Anna Howard Shaw Day" wasn't as fun and funny as it could have been. Certainly there were some great laughs, but the episode as a whole felt a bit flat and joyless. Liz's aggressive behavior against Valentine's Day was more mean than humorous in most spots. And when her plan to avoid the holiday trappings backfired on her -- she would need to arrange a "date" to pick her up after surgery -- her complaining about the predicament was a drag to sit through. It was hard to feel sorry for her as people kept turning her down due to other Valentine's Day related arrangements -- most of which were, in fact, quite funny.
