The history of videogame-to-movie adaptations has been littered with failures. Some have been minor mistakes; the likes of Resident Evil and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider watchable yet unremarkable misfires. Others have been blunders on a grand scale, with misguided moviemakers creating disasters out of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros. and countless other gaming properties.
Unwilling to give these titles the time, attention and budget they deserve, the Hollywood system instead puts them in the care of hack writers and directors who lose the plot, mess with the formula, butcher the characters and then send them out into the world to be roundly mocked by gamers and non-gamers alike.
