In "Eternity", Richard and his friends split up yet again, tackling different emergencies. At least this time there is some real progress in the search for the Stone of Tears. And I mean real progress because they actually find it! It's about time.
The group splits up when it is revealed, out of the blue, that Cara had a child with Darken Rahl and that the boy has been kidnapped. It is not too surprising that Cara has never spoken of this child; in fact it is in character for her to try to be as unemotional about it as possible. Considering how badly everything goes on the rescue mission, it is interesting to note that Richard, Kahlan and Zedd's reactions to the news of the kidnapping are what get Cara going. Her preference would have been to stay with Richard and search for the Stone.
With Zedd accompanying Cara, Richard and Kahlan have a chance for a little alone time. It almost turns into an eternity of alone time when they find themselves trapped, having found the Stone, but unable to leave the magical valley. The followers of the Creator who have been guarding the Stone of Tears for a thousand years are serene and smiley in a way that is downright unsettling, so we know right away they are not going to be helpful. True enough, they are not concerned with helping our heroes save the world. The plan is for Richard and Kahlan to wait out the destruction and then start over, repopulating the world themselves. I had to laugh at the scene where Richard and Kahlan ponder their situation. Kahlan is worried about their friends and family, but Richard is thinking that maybe now they can finally have a little sex. It's what the Creator wants them to do, right?
