I didn't know this. According to Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cheery, he originally intended to have Katherine (Dana Delaney) marry Mike (James Denton) in the season 6 opener. However, going around, he changed his mind and instead decided to have Susan (Teri Hatcher) tie the knot lest he incur the fury of fans.
"I originally was going to have Mike marry Katherine, but as I went out into the world on vacation and just started talking to people they were so determined that Mike and Susan should get together; they were so insistent on it. So I started to think, 'What if I went that way?' And it occurred to me that it might be a more effective way to go as opposed to frustrating the fans for another year by keeping Mike and Susan apart. The fans demanded it in a voice so loud I was kind of scared to go against them."
Besides, he said, Mike marrying Susan plays better for the season's mystery that either has or doesn't have anything to do with the new family the Bolens. As for the lady who was deserted for so-called popular opinion, Katherine will suffer "one of the funniest" breakdowns ever on Desperate Housewives.
13.24 million people tuned in to see Susan revealed to be the secret bride that Mike married in last season Desperate Housewives finale (but we get it that Katherine's not exactly going down without a fight). Elsewhere on the kick-off, almost all the storylines forged ahead: Bree (Marcia Cross) had been sneaking around with Karl, Lynette (Felicity Huffman) revealed that she's not exactly too keen on the pregnancy, while Gaby (Eva Longoria Parker) set up boundaries with her now legal ward.
