James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar soared to the No. 1 spot at the box office, earning $73 million domestically and $159.2 million overseas for a total of $232.2 million worldwide.
Despite a snowstorm on the East Coast, the 20th Century Fox flick had the ninth largest worldwide opening of all time and the biggest opening for a non-sequel, BoxOfficeMojo.com reported. Cameron's last narrative feature, Titanic, became the highest-grossing movie ever at $600.8 million.
While the 3D hit dominated at the box office, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker's Did You Hear About the Morgans? took in a mere $7 million at No. 4, and last week's top-grossing picture, The Princess and the Frog, fell to $12.2 million in the second spot.
At No. 3, Sandra Bullock's The Blind Side continues to stand firm after taking in $10 million in 31 days.
Rounding out the top 10: The Twilight Saga: New Moon (No. 5, $4.4 million); Invictus (No. 6, $4.2 million); A Christmas Carol (No. 7, $3.4 million ); Up in the Air (No. 8, $3.1 million); Brothers (No. 9, $2.6 million); Old Dogs (No. 10, $2.3 million).
