The Avengers have found their new television home. Disney XD announced this week they will be airing the new animated series, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which will feature Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America, Giant Man and Wasp.
When the series was first announced in fall 2008, Marvel didn't yet have a channel attached, but the revelation that it will be on Disney XD is not a surprise, in the wake of Disney buying Marvel last year. Specifically targeted at young males, Disney XD is likely going to have much more new Marvel content going forward.
One surprising element of the announcement, made this week at Disney's Upfront event, is that the show will be debuting this fall, since the original press release for the series said it wouldn't be airing until 2011. The Marvel/Disney deal may have led to the show being moved up, but Disney also notes the desire to put the Avengers name out there to the public before the upcoming slate of Avengers-related movies begins to be released, including Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America and of course, The Avengers film. Also mentioned in the announcement is an impressive 52-episode order for the animated series. When we spoke to Dawn Olivieri (Heroes) at the start of this year, she noted she was already recording Season 2 episodes of the show. Olivieri plays Pepper Potts on the series.
