We've come full circle, with Treme ending its first season run the same way it opened: with a second line. A nice metaphor for New Orleans post-Katrina as a whole: sad and joyful, somber and celebratory, dark and vibrant.
Agnieska Holland, another veteran of The Wire, directed this beautiful and sad season finale, and in my opinion did a great job with it. An hour and a half is long for any episode of television, and you could argue that it wasn't strictly necessary in any storytelling sense. On the other hand, "I'll Fly Away," more than any other episode except for perhaps "Do You Know What It Means?", was a showcase for the music, spirit and physical beauty of New Orleans. Overall I think it was a strong and moving episode that closed out some storylines nicely and left others open-ended to explore next season.
