24 Season 8, Episode 12: "Day 8: 3:00 AM-4:00 AM" Review 8

Well, well, well. In the midst of a pretty lame season, this was actually a rather entertaining episode of 24 that delivered some nicely done tension and several "That was cool" moments.

Not that it was perfect, mind you. First off, let's talk about the spectacularly stupid and ignorant Sgt. Amos, a member of the NYPD who simply refused to listen to Jack's orders to back down. He's one of those magically dense characters who pop up on this show now and again - it's not just that he was dumb and annoying, it's that he was refusing to listen to a man who had just established he had jurisdiction. Come on, Sgt. Amos! Don't you know they'll be consequences to ignoring Jack Bauer? Like getting suspended? Or being shot and killed by a terrorist?

Good thing Amos was killed early on, because otherwise, Tarin's escape, with Kayla as his hostage, was a pretty exciting turn of events. Kayla tied to the chair and briefly suffocated was appropriately horrifying and Tarin's subsequent actions were also filled with some well done twists and turns, as he first decided he couldn't go along with hurting her and helped her escape - but was shot in the process - and then turned out to have pulled a big ol' switchback, as we discovered the entire "I've had second thoughts about torturing and killing my girlfriend" thing was part of Samir's plan.
