Dexter Game On will launch at the San Diego 2010 Comic-Con. Fans of the show will be able to unlock exclusive content from the upcoming fifth season and can also win merchandise, including DVD boxsets.
Showtime has worked with iPhone and Android-based application SCVNGR to design the game, in which Comic-Con attendees are encouraged to wear a temporary tattoo resembling the trademark slash on the right cheek with which Dexter (Michael C. Hall) marks his victims on television.
Players will then take pictures of themselves sporting their new tattoos and can upload them to the Dexter Game On site at DexterGameOn.com. A treasure hunt for merchandise around Comic-Con will follow.
Similar events are planned in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle and Atlanta for those unable to attend Comic-Con. A Facebook application has also been designed to allow fans to post their tattoo photos online.
"At Showtime, we pride ourselves for being at the cutting edge of technology and are excited to be the first television network to join forces with SCVNGR," said Robert Hayes, senior vice president of Digital Media for the network. "Comic-Con is the perfect venue to further engage our loyal fans with this robust interactive social media game, while providing added value to our over three million Dexter fans on Facebook."
"The Dexter challenges on SCVNGR are truly killer," added SCVNGR executive Seth Priebatsch. "Fans should grab the SCVNGR app and play Dexter Game On at Comic-Con, and all across the country to help unlock an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming fifth season."
The new season of Dexter premieres September 26 on Showtime.
