30 Rock Gets a Zero for the Day

What can we say? Sometimes comedy just doesn't cross cultural barriers the way you'd like it to. 30 Rock, the Emmy-award winning NBC insane asylum, debuted in Germany last Sunday night and, long story short, it scored a big fat zero.

A 0.0 rating over there translates to roughly under 5,000 viewers, which is just depressing. The show itself was heavily hyped and part of the launch of Germany's new ZDFNeo channel; a digital niche channel run by pubweb. Some factors that were working against 30 Rock were the fact that A: it was dubbed into German and B: not everyone in Deutschland had access to ZDFNeo (only about 40% of the households).

Still, it's a hard schnitzel to swallow when something we think is so funny makes another country yawn. It's called the Hasselhoff Factor, I suppose.
