Artists! They can be so temperamental. Singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright appeared on 'Chelsea Lately' (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!). While he was on the show, the acclaimed musician described his plans for his latest concert tour. It seems that for the first half of his performances, Wainwright demands complete and utter silence from his audience.
Chelsea Handler questioned Rufus about this whole issue. The reason for the silence edict is this: Wainwright wants his listeners to pay attention -- as he's singing an entire album, in its entirety, all the way through. "Why do you [ask the audience to be] silent?" Chelsea asked. " ... Because I can," Rufus replied. Ooh, nice! That's pretty honest. We like it. And seriously, isn't it nicer to hear a concert without a lot of people talking and making noise?
But then, Chelsea's own audience made the mistake of applauding Rufus's strong "no talking during shows" stance. "Don't applaud!" Rufus jokingly said, while trying to shut up the crowd with his hand. "Yeah, you guys," Chelsea added to the audience. "Don't be stupid; shut the f#ck up."
