For those of you who've been hiding under a rock for the last few months, Jay Leno has returned to reclaim his title as host of The Tonight Show. Plenty has already been said about the late-night saga at NBC and the sad truth is that if everyone who claimed they were with Coco had actually tuned to watch his show, this whole mess could've been avoided. But you didn't and now we have Jay back at 11:35pm again. That's right America, I blame you. Just kidding. Sort of.
Other than an opening sketch which parodied The Wizard of Oz (in which Jay played Dorothy waking up from the bad dream that was the last few months) and a bit where Jay searched for a new desk, the "premiere" episode felt a lot like every other episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. And it also felt very similar to the premiere episode of The Jay Leno Show, where he also downplayed the novelty of the entire scenario. And just like the 10pm show, it was the first guest (Jerry Seinfeld then, Jamie Foxx now) who really broached the subject and turned the night into a celebration. I thought Jamie Foxx went a bit over-the-top (spraying the crowd with champagne may have been a bit much), but at least he brought some energy to the proceedings. Otherwise, it seemed like Jay treated the whole night like it was just another show.
