30 Rock: "Dealbreakers Talk Show No. 0001" Review Season 4, Episode 7

"Dealbreakers Talk Show No. 0001" was a nice return to form for 30 Rock after a couple of so-so episodes. Much of the strength of the episode came from Liz and Jack's constant interaction throughout the half hour. But there were also some great laughs from the storylines surrounding Tracy and Frank.

It was finally time to shoot the very first "Dealbreakers" talk show, and both Liz and Jack were thrilled with the possibilities. Jack felt the show would be a big hit, turning Liz into "a swarthy, big-hipped Kelly Ripa." Liz, too, felt the success of the show would change her life. But Liz's blonde-haired fantasy of her life to come was interrupted by a real world "TGS" crisis. Jenna had once again thrown a performer's tantrum and locked herself in her dressing room. It was up to Liz to talk her out of it, and the threat of replacing Jenna with her nemesis, Jenny McCarthy, did the trick.

This fairly standard opening set the stage for what was to come. Jack received a call from Devon Banks who threatened terrible things for Jack if Liz's talk show lost any amount of money. Devon is now, after all, controlling the NBC bailout money. This put Jack on edge, causing him to over think the show, and most especially Liz's appeal. First he got her to lose the glasses (by getting "Lasig" surgery with Dr. Spaceman), and then he hinted that her hair could be styled better. This set Liz into her own personal panic, ultimately creating a Performer Liz and a Regular Liz.
