Stargate Universe Episode 6: "Water" - Review

The ragtag crew of the Destiny has survived running out of air and running out of power, and the newest crisis is a water shortage. What separates this tale from the previous resource issues is that an unwelcome swarm of alien guests is sucking up the resources this time. It sounds like a sci-fi horror movie plot, but this version is decidedly less thrilling than that.

First, let's go through the good parts of this episode. Eli's humor wins in this one, with his casual geek culture references to Star Wars and Alien. He's also a source of creative engineering with his hover-sled.

Another character that gets some nice development is Greer. He's definitely a lovable badass, and apparently he's got a little bit of creative engineering in him too as he puts together a flame-thrower from the scattered objects on Destiny. That "I can invent stuff too" line is great writing, and it's delivered perfectly by Jamil Walker Smith.

And while I'm gushing over character development, we've gotta talk about how Colonel Young has developed. One of the key aspects of this episode is the dynamic between Scott and Young, especially when Scott slips into a crevasse in the ice. Young's commitment to his crewmate is admirable, and every bit in line with what we know of the character so far. And the scene at the end of the episode, with Colonel Young being pestered by an ever increasing list of issues that need to be addressed, really shows how heavy the crown of leadership is. Louis Ferreira is working his role well.

So yeah, the characterizations in this one are great. The plot...bored me tears.
