Modern Family: "Not In My House" Review Episode 12

There's just such a pleasant comedic ease to ABC's Modern Family. The series does the over-the-top stuff magnificently -- canceling Christmas, birthday party disasters, Spandau Ballet bassists -- but they can also put a hilarious spin on the average stuff. White lies and couples' pet peeves came into play in "Not in My House," and while the episode wasn't overloaded with hard hitting jokes, the subtle precision of the humor that was on display made for an overwhelming enjoyable experience.

The episode began with Claire discovering a woman "with the biggest boobs I have ever seen driving a tractor" on her laptop. She assumed Luke was responsible, but right away we see a confessional with Phil where he admits to downloading it. This sets up the rest of the storyline's comedy as Phil did everything he could to prevent Claire from talking to Luke about the photo. This was right up Ty Burrell's alley, as he is a master at conveying a nervousness full of thought and attempted cunning. The storyline itself was nothing new to the sitcom canon, but the cast and writing did a great job of using the familiarity to play off this particular set of original characters.
