Secret Diary of a Call Girl: ''Billie and the Real Belle Bare All'' Review

The Season 3 opener was a documentary-style debrief between Billie Piper, actress in the series, and Dr. Brooke Magnanti, the recently-outed author behind the salacious blogs, books and ITV British series Secret Diary of a Call Girl. American-born Magnanti is a leading researcher and professor at Bristol University and a published, award winner author. Up until November of 2009 she was a well-respected PhD candidate working on her thesis for developmental neurotoxicology and cancer epidemiology, but when the press caught wind of her alter ego, 'Belle Du Jour,' she decided it was time to reveal her true self to the world.

Magnanti hid behind 'Belle' for nearly six years before she was forced into the open, and her abrupt entrance into the limelight cast a bit of a shadow over the series. Showtime and ITV did the best they could to wrangle the media storm into this 25-minute interview and the blunt and unrefined tape was interesting and refreshing. It opened with Piper in a taxi, first with a dubbed voiceover and then the show's trademark aside where she directed her comments directly to the audience. Then Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" played over and the stage was set.
