Smallville Season 9, Episode 20: "Hostage" Review

Great Cesar's ghost! Annette O'Toole and Michael McKean return to Smallville in this season's penultimate episode. With Zod's super-powered army searching for the Book of Rao, Clark must rely on those he trusts most to find it first. Meanwhile, the Black King hunts for the Red Queen in Tess Mercer's mind.

Lois and Clark's breakup has been a long time coming. Still, it's a little strange seeing the two part ways and it will be interesting to see how they work together after having a romantic relationship. Martha's suggestion that Clark be honest with Lois echoes my sentiments from a couple of weeks ago about the Lois and Clark relationship. It's good to see Martha bring a levelheaded approach to being a superhero.

Martha's appearance was appropriately timed. With Clark struggling to balance his dual life, he needed a little guidance from someone other than Chloe or Ollie. Her reveal as the Red Queen, while predictable, was appropriate and allowed Martha to relate to Clark in a way she never has before. Just like Clark, she's also living a dual life and fighting to protect those around her. It's an interesting and unexplored dynamic to their relationship but it's too bad Martha isn't around long enough to really allow us to delve into her new life.
