Star Wars: The Clone Wars - "Legacy of Terror" Review

This installment introduced an element we've never seen in any Star Wars live-action or animated story before - zombies. Interestingly, a just-released Star Wars novel, Death Troopers, also has a zombie plotline. I guess more than one person wondered what it would be like to see the undead added to the Star Wars universe.

Continuing the story arc on Geonosis, Luminara was determined to capture Poggle the Lesser, tracking him to a temple. The darker tone of this episode was established early on, in a scene that was the most humanizing we've ever had for the usually annoying Battle Droids. If we have to accept the Battle Droids as having any sort of individual personalities, it's nice to have it done in a way besides awkward slapstick humor, so seeing that one droid yell, "Don't leave meeee!!" as a sandstorm overtook him and left him buried and deactivated was a strong way to do it.

But it was after Luminara was captured that things really got creepy. The scene in which she woke up to find herself being dragged through a tunnel by several Geonosians and began fighting them was a notable one for several reasons. First off, the fact that Luminara's hands were bound and she had no lightsaber stacked the deck against her, while also allowing us to see she was still able to hold her own - but the glowing, yet dead looking eyes of these particular Geonosians hinted at something that became evident when Luminara punched in the stomach of one of the creatures in a particularly brutal way, with no results. Which was, quite simply that these dudes were dead!

That was only a prologue to the scenario that occurred when Obi-Wan, Anakin, Cody and several Clone Troopers came looking for Luminara. When the Zombie Geonosians (my new favorite term and potential band name) attacked, we got some material that was as horror-movie like as Star Wars has ever been. This was classic zombie movie stuff, done in a fun manner, as our heroes found out the hard way that lightsabers and lasers couldn't stop these guys - perhaps most memorably portrayed when Cody shot one of the Geonosians point blank and the creature's head snapped back, then turned forward again, blankly grinning, with a new laser hole burned into his forehead.
