Why did they change the story

Hey why is it that they went from saving earth to fighting their own swords. The new story is cool and i like the new animation is nice but what the hell happened to the big fight and the trapped people? And are they going to go back to that story?

It's a way to buy more time - Tite Kubo hadn't finished the previous arc in the manga yet, so the TV series created an all-new storyline in order to let some material build up that they can turn into animation without having to stretch the material to its utmost limit (see: Dragonball Z). It's filler in the truest sense, even though it's been pretty cool so far.
