How I Met Your Mother: Revertigo

I can finally say with confidence that the writers of How I Met Your Mother are back! Last night's episode "Sandcastles in the Sand" encapsulated all of the components of a laugh out loud funny sitcom.. and more!

Robin's past as a Canadian pop singer (Robin Sparkles) is again showcased when her old summer love Simon (played by James Van Der Beek) comes to New York and contacts her. (Cue the Canada jokes!)

A well known fact is that there's always a winner and a loser when you haven't seen someone in a long time and are reunited. Robin preps her boobs and looks forward to seeing this old love, knowing that she is CLEARLY going to be the winner. One problem: Revertigo. Revertigo is the word Marshall makes up to explain the phenomenon of reverting back to the way you were when you knew someone, every time you see them after that.

In a completely inexplicable revertigo moment, Robin forgets her magnificent boobs, job, and successes and falls back into the 16-year-old-Canadian-pop-star version of herself the minute that washed-up Simon (now working the slides at a Canadian water park, still living with his parents) walks into Maclarens.

Everyone is perplexed at her behavior and tries to remind her how awesome she is and how she is the clear winner, but revertigo takes over and we see Robin totally lose her cool in the presence of the now fat, balding, and unstudly Simon. She even goes as far as to play his band's song "Murder Train" on the news during Puppy Corner, a segment trying to get people to adopt puppies!

We find out that they met on the set of Robin Sparkles' SECOND music video for her attempt at an 80s ballad: "Sandcastles in the Sand." Barney devotes DAYS trying to find a copy of it but to no avail! It is nowhere to be found! Don't worry, though, the writers of HIMYM wouldn't leave us hanging like that!

We also get to experience another magnificent example of Revertigo when Marshall invites Lily's friend Michelle to come hang out. In the presence of Michelle (now a PHD student at Columbia), Lily channels her inner ghetto superstar, apparently completely oblivious to the fact she's doing it. Definitely a hilarious side of Lily we never saw coming!

Anyway, after going to see Simon's band, The Foreskins, (named because there are four of them... and they play without shirts, of course!!) Robin experiences deja vu. Simon dumps her in the exact same place, for the exact same reason, as he did when they were sixteen!

Feeling down on herself after ultimately losing the competition that she clearly should have won, who ends up consoling her? None other than Barney Stinsen, our most unlikely candidate! Barney reassures her how awesome she is (the second most awesome person he knows, only after the person in the mirror!) and only then does she agree to show him the second long lost Robin Sparkles video! With hilarious lines like "It was the greatest week and a half of my life" and "I'm on birth control now!" that only an 80s pop star would try to pull off, and hysterical cameos by real 80s pop singer Tiffany and Alan Thicke, the music video did not disappoint!!!

The most unexpected part of the whole episode was the twist at the end! I never would've seen that coming, and I can't WAIT to see how that plays out next week!

I am SO happy that HIMYM is back and hysterical as ever, and would be beyond disappointed if CBS doesn't sign it up on a fourth season next year!

Yes, Yes!! How could I have forgotten the brilliance of our dear old Dawson!? I was on the floor laughing when he was talking about how important his job is at the top of the water slide!! I, too, was pleasantly surprised with his performance!

I loved the episode, really i did, had me histerics, especially "punchy" and lillys reaction to michelle. But im not sure i liked the twist, it was a good twist, deffinatly, but im not sure that what happens will make me appreciate the character as much.
