Friday Night Lights: "Expectations" Review

And so begins the final season of Friday Night Lights. Now don't get me wrong, I'm going to miss the hell out of this show, but I am so happy it's ending the way it is. This is a truly wonderful TV series that very few people watch. By TV odds it should have been cancelled after Season 1 or 2. Yet it got a healthy five-year run, and is ending on its own terms. That is a huge accomplishment and one that, sadly, makes Friday Night Lights stand out in many ways.

So how was the season premiere? Really good. Not among the very best of the series, but this is a show whose average episode is so far better than most. Let me get some gripes out of the way: Becky's stepmom was a caricature. She was such a horrible, reprehensible woman that she felt cartoonish. Also, I know there are reasons involving actors and storylines, but having both Becky's mom and Jess' dad written out off camera felt a bit off.
