Doctor Who: Season 5 Review

To celebrate the release of Doctor Who: Series 5 on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK, we draw our verdict on Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Steven Moffat's inaugural season debut.

Let's be honest, Steven Moffat had a hard act to follow. Russell T. Davies, during his five year tenure as Doctor Who showrunner, pretty much redefined the notion of family television, injecting heart, soul and a spirit of adventure into the BBC's long-running sci-fi show, bringing it to the masses like never before. How would the show's fan base deal with a complete reset for their beloved Time Lord?

With fan-favourite David Tennant gone and a whole new team onboard for Season 5, this latest venture through time and space couldn't have been more of an unknown quantity. Thankfully then, Moffat and crew allayed all fears surrounding the change-over almost immediately as "The Eleventh Hour" kick-started Season 5 in spectacular style. Here we got our first glimpse of this bolder, fantastical take on Doctor Who, not to mention Karen Gillan as the strong-willed, sexy new companion Amy Pond and, of course, Matt Smith as the Doctor.
