How I Met Your Mother: "Natural History" Review

Monday night delivered another disappointing episode of How I Met Your Mother. The half hour was simply short on laughs, with weak attempts at humor coming from childish behavior and potty jokes. It would be best to classify "Natural History" as filler, except it did contain one big moment for the series: Barney discovered who his dad is.

There really wasn't a lot that worked well in this episode. The location, a formal shindig at the Natural History Museum, took our gang out of their element and the results were middling. Much of the half hour was dedicated to Lily learning that Marshall wants to stay at Goliath National Bank instead of becoming an environmental lawyer who would change the world. This storyline offered up many familiar tropes of How I Met, including flashbacks to their college days. These bits have been very effective in the past, but they fell flat in Monday's episode. I've always enjoyed the running gag of a sandwich taking the place of a joint in the father's retelling of the story, but here it was just feeling tired. Lily talking with the display of the extinct College Marshall was a fun idea, but it fell short of its potential.
