We’ve had some moments of drama on this show, but nothing so far compares to the opening scenes of this episode with Chin sitting in the middle of the street with a bomb around his neck. After that they took us back in time and we find out that the person who put him there was none other than Victor Hesse, the man who killed McGarrett’s father.
I liked that, though they did bring back a man who was shot twice in the chest and should be fish food, they took great pains to walk us through everything he did when he dragged himself out of the water. We weren’t left just to wonder how he survived, we got to see the doctor who fixed him up. It made him still the villain, but a human one, which took Hesse’s return from feeling like something out of a comic book and brought it firmly back into reality.
I also liked that we finally got to find out the story of what happened when Chin was framed and accused of taking payoffs. They way they worked it into this episode, with the money from the case being the one thing that could save his life, was very clever.
