The Discovery Channel's reality TV series Man vs. Wild played a big part in helping a Portland teen stranded in below freezing temperatures survive long enough for a rescue worthy of its own episode.
When 14-year-old Jake Denham became separated from his mother last Friday during a ski trip on Mt. Bachelor, he tapped into knowledge learned from the Bear Grylls-hosted show to stay calm and plan his survival in the frozen wilderness. The teen built a snow bank to stay warm during the 10 hours he was lost on the mountain, and looked to the Northstar for directions while awaiting rescue by the Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol who launched a search mission with the National Guard and Deschutes County Search and Rescue.
On Saturday morning -- coincidentally his mother's birthday -- Denham was located, reportedly in "good condition."
"This is the best birthday present ever," his mother, Becky Denham, told local KOHD News.
