How I Met Your Mother: "Bad News" Review

How I Met Your Mother returned in good form on Monday night, making us laugh and (quite unexpectedly) cry. The season so far has had some trouble spots, mostly in the form of Ted's nemesis/possible love interest Zoey, but "Bad News" avoided those stumbles and delivered a classic episode that will surely rank high with some of the show's best.

The plots were fairly basic, but the writing kept things elevated and very funny. Lily and Marshall were afraid something was wrong with them, as they've been unable to conceive after months of trying. This is a common path for any sitcom tracking the baby-making process. How I Met gave the story its patented twists, including the hilarious official appearance of Barney's doppelganger -- appropriately enough he was a fertility doctor. Marshall needing to produce a sperm sample was another common sitcom bit, but HIMYM did it justice with Marshall's parents showing up preventing him from performing. Their comments just outside the bathroom door were priceless.
