MR SUNSHINE “Pilot” Review

MR SUNSHINE "Pilot" Season 1 Episode 1 – Allison Janney back on television as a misanthropic, unstable druggie ruling over a powerful empire of clowns, elephants and Himilayan children, disowning her goofy son and giving racist speeches accompanied by a sing along…what more could you ask for?

Well, Mr Sunshine I’m sorry to say did not live up to the promise of its trailer (shocking, I know). In a well directed, well acted pilot episode, it is a pity that the show tripped itself up by thinking it was funnier than it was and thinking it was more touching than it was. Matthew Perry, star and co-creator, appears to be on Chandler-auto as he zig zags through the various caricatures: semi-ex girlfriend who just wants more attention, the always cheerful, always helpful best friend Alonso, the surrogate son whose relationship with his crazy mother Chandler/Ben tries to fix within the first episode and by way of throwing the kid on a golf cart and saying "make nice!" which is supposed to heal years of probable neglect.
