The Borgias: "The Poisoned Chalice/The Assassin" Review

Showtime's The Borgias, a sumptuous and sexy new drama series set during the Italian Renaissance, chronicles the rise and crimes of one of history's most nefarious dynasties, or as the marketing materials call them, the world's first crime family. 

Oscar winner Jeremy Irons stars as family patriarch RodrigoBorgia, a cunning cardinal in the Catholic Church whose ruthless ambition sees him elected Pope Alexander VI following the death of Innocent VIII in 1492. The Borgias are Spaniards attempting to rise to power in the epicenter of Italian power and culture. Rodrigo grooms his son Cesare (Francois Arnaud) to be his muscle. Cesare is as corrupt, lascivious and greedy as his father.
