Mortal Kombat: Legacy - "Episode 1" Review

For those unaware, a while back writer/director Kevin Tancharoen (best known for his mediocre remake, Fame) made an unofficial short film called Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. FeaturingJeri Ryan as Sonya Blade and resident badass Michael Jai White as Jax, the film was produced as a rough pitch to Warner Brothers to gain momentum for a retelling of the Mortal Kombat story. The idea was to add a more "realistic" edge, combining the gritty R-rated violence of something like Saw or Se7en with the style and feel of something like The Dark Knight. The resulting short was met with quite a bit of fan acclaim, though, to be frank – as a longtime fan of the series, I much preferred the more mystical aspect of the original games. After all, Mortal Kombat seemed more a series about religion fighting darkness – good vs. evil, etc. There was gore, sure. But there was something else there, too. However, the setting and ideas of Rebirth are certainly interesting, and the short is incredibly well made. Despite my distaste for the short's concept, I was game to see what Tancharoen could do with the material. This episode was ok but i can not wait for the real action to start!!!
